28 October 2014
October marks the month of Safe Work Australia Safety month, which encourages all employers to be involved with and raise awareness of health and safety in their own workplace. This year's theme Work safe. Home safe, particularly illustrates that workplace safety is not confined to specific geographic locations, but to all employees whether they are commuting or working remotely. Accordingly to Safe Work Australia, 137 Australians have already been killed at work this year, which necessitates the need for employers to review their own safety measures and current duress precautions in place.
Monitoring and ensuring staff are protected 24/7 is not only a legal requirement, but also something of increasing difficulty with the rise of isolated and remote workers. Lone workers are considered a higher risk and businesses must therefore implement safety measures accordingly.
What is a lone or dangerous worker?
Any worker who is isolated from medical, emergency or rescue assistance due to the location, time or type of work being conducted. Examples include late night monitoring staff, employees carrying out fieldwork, transport drivers etc.
How can employers manage risks involved with remote working?
Communications between the remote worker and organisation, either by mobile phone, Laipac Lola devices and radio is an effective way to ensure distress calls are accurately delivered and efficiently responded to.
What solutions are available today?
WiComply and WiDuress provide Operations, Incident, Compliance, Response and Location management on any IOS or Android device. Used in conjunction, they are designed to help employers track and communicate with any of their staff members, vehicles or assets. The SaaS platform ensures employees can be monitored and communicated with anytime, anywhere and via any device, which is particularly important in addressing the risks associated with remote working. The seamless integration between Smartphone and desktop ensures lone workers can always be located and monitored by a dedicated communication centre.
WiDuress serves as a separate application for staff requiring increased personal security. Once activated, the app tracks users' specific location and identifies predefined boundaries and time controls. In times of distress, staff members simply press a button to instantly send an alert with GPS tracking to monitoring teams. If communication with the staff member is not possible, response teams will be sent directly to this location. Thanks to the intelligence of Google Maps, this intuitive application ensures accurate location, and gives organisations the confidence to ensure that their employees are accounted for.
The WiDuress solution works both in Australia and overseas and is therefore a great way of knowing where your staff are when travelling abroad.
